BHP said it was saddened to advise of the death.

“The next of kin and family have been informed and we are working closely with the authorities on the matter,” a BHP spokesperson said.

“We extend our deepest condolences and support to our colleague’s family and friends, as well as our other employees and contractors at this difficult time.”

South Australian police were called to the site near Roxby Downs just before 6.30am local time following a rock fall.

The 47-year-old from Tumby Bay died at the scene.

BHP said a full investigation was underway, while police will prepare a report for the state coroner.

SafeWork SA has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and said the area had been secured and works within the site suspended.

“SafeWork SA’s investigation into the incident will identify any breaches of the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA) as well as all parties with potential responsibility for workplace safety,” the regulator said.

Today’s accident marks the first workplace death in SA in 2015.
